Why would anyone want to work in the legal profession? Aren’t lawyers unscrupulous ambulance-chasers who use deceit to win cases for their clients? This is a popular view of the law, of course, but it’s a broad generalization that doesn’t take into account the fact that our society depends on its justice system to stay intact, and our justice system depends on lawyers, judges and other legal professionals. Besides, a career in the law can be fun, exciting and rewarding, and can allow you to help people who need the protection of the law.

There are many other reasons to go for a legal job as well. First, there are so many career options available. There are actually dozens, if not hundreds, of different jobs in the legal field. Besides judges and lawyers, the law needs legal assistants (called paralegals), researchers, advisors and consultants, administrative assistants, bailiffs, accountants and all kinds of other staff members as well. Many of these jobs pay quite well, too: it’s not just the lawyers who make the big bucks. And most legal professions are not affected by a bad economy. In fact, this might be a horrible thing to say, but many times those who work legal jobs are actually helped by a bad economy. During recessions there are more foreclosures and repossessions, and therefore more people taking legal action to try to reclaim their property. In fact, there is as much demand now for legal professionals as there has ever been in the past, if not more. And many economic forecasters predict that the demand for legal professionals will only grow over the next several years.

It’s also just plain exciting to work in the law. You get to develop a close professional relationship with your clients, and sometimes you can really help them out. If someone has been abused by a partner, or sexually harassed in the office, or someone has been cheated out of a fair wage, then you can advocate for them and help ensure that justice is done, whatever your role in the proceedings may be. Whether you go to court or do research at a law office, the pace of this kind of work is often fast and furious; there are tight deadlines to be met and so the adrenaline is often pumping. Plus, you always have to challenge your mind. The law isn’t always a science; sometimes it’s an art, which means you can approach a given legal case like a puzzle, and as part of a legal team you will have to help figure out the best strategies for solving that puzzle. The law is always changing, too, as is the technology that law firms use, so your profession involves constant growth and education. And despite all the jokes and snide remarks made about lawyers, legal professionals really are respected and esteemed members of society. What would we do without them?
